第1章　聖書について（Of the Holy Scripture）

第1節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳・直訳）自然の光、そして創造と摂理のわざは、神の善、知恵、力を明らかに示し、人間を弁解できない者とする。しかし、それらは、救いに必要な、神および神の御心についての知識を授けるには十分ではない。ゆえに、主は多くの時代にわたり、多様な方法で、ご自身を啓示し、教会に御心を知らせてこられた。しかし、真理の保全と、肉・悪魔・世からの堕落に対する教会の確固たる支えのために、その啓示を完全に聖書に記録することが神の御心であった。よって、聖書は必要不可欠であり、かつ、神がかつて用いられた形による啓示は現在すでに終わっている。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）自然を見るだけでも、神が生きておられることは分かります。しかし、それだけでは 救いに必要な真理 は分かりません。そのため神は、ご自身のことを 聖書に確かに書き留められました。今、神を知り、救いに歩むためには、聖書こそが中心であり十分です。

③ 英語原文（1646）Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence, do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable;yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of His will, which is necessary unto salvation.Therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times and in divers manners, to reveal Himself, and to declare His will unto His Church;and afterwards, for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and of Satan, and of the world,to commit the same wholly unto writing; which maketh the Holy Scripture to be most necessary;those former ways of God's revealing His will unto His people being now ceased.

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）「聖書」または「神の言葉の書かれたもの」と呼ばれるものには、現在、旧約と新約のすべての書物が含まれている。これらはすべて 神によって霊感され、信仰と生活の基準として与えられた。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書は 旧約39巻・新約27巻、合わせて66巻です。すべて神が語られた言葉であり、信仰と歩みの土台です。

③ 英語原文（1646）Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God written, are now contained all the books of the Old and New Testament…All which are given by inspiration of God, to be the rule of faith and life.

第3節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）聖書の権威は、人間や教会の証言から生じるのではなく、聖書が神の言葉であるがゆえに生じる。ゆえに私たちは、聖書を信じ、従うのである。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書は人が決めたものではなく、神が語られた言葉だから従います。

③ 英語原文（1646）The authority of the Holy Scripture… depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God…

第4節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）教会の証言は、聖書が神の言葉であることを尊重する助けとなるが、聖書が確かに神の言葉であるという確信は、聖霊が御言葉を通して信者の心に内的に証しされることによって与えられる。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書が本当に神の言葉だと分かるのは、聖霊が心で教えてくださるからです。

③ 英語原文（1646）…our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit…

第5節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）救いに必要な真理は、聖書に明確に示されており、学識のある者もない者も、十分に理解できる。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）救いに必要なことは、聖書を読めば ちゃんと分かるように示されています。

③ 英語原文（1646）Those things which are necessary to be known… are so clearly propounded…

第6節（極めて重要）

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）信仰と生活に必要なすべてのことは、聖書に完全に含まれている。ゆえに、新しい啓示や人間の教えを、救いの基準に加えてはならない。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書だけが 信仰と人生の土台です。他の教えを足すことはできません。

③ 英語原文（1646）The whole counsel of God… is either expressly set down in Scripture…

第7節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）聖書の中には、私たちの救いに必要な教えが、ある部分は直接、ある部分は「良く必要な論理的結論」によって示されている。たとえ、神の啓示のすべてが、聖書そのものの言葉として記されていなくとも、聖書から正しく導かれる教理は、信仰と生活において同じ権威を持つ。しかし、私たちは、信仰や生活の基準として、人間の意見、礼拝儀式、伝統、宗教会議の決定を聖書と同列に置いてはならない。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書には、救いに必要なすべてが書かれています。もし言葉として直接書かれていなくても、聖書から正しく導き出せることは、すべて神の教えです。だから、人の考えや伝統を「神の教え」として足してはいけません。

③ 英語原文（1646）…The whole counsel of God… is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture;… Therefore we are not to make anything the rule of faith and manners which is contrary to, or beside, the Scripture.

第8節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）旧約聖書は元々ヘブライ語で、新約聖書はギリシャ語で書かれた。それらは直接霊感された文書であり、信仰の基準として絶対に信頼できる。しかし、神の民が聖書を理解できるように、聖書は各民族の言語に翻訳されるべきである。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）聖書はもともと原語で書かれましたが、すべての国の人が読めるように、その国の言葉に翻訳することは神の御心です。

③ 英語原文（1646）The Old Testament in Hebrew… and the New Testament in Greek… being immediately inspired by God…But, because these original tongues are not known to all the people of God…therefore they are to be translated into the vulgar language of every nation…

第9節

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）聖書において解釈が難しい部分は、より明確な箇所によって解釈されるべきである。そして、聖書の解釈の最終判断者は聖書自身である。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）難しいところは、聖書の別の場所のはっきりした教えで説明します。最終的な基準は、聖書そのものです。

③ 英語原文（1646）The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself…the true and full sense of Scripture… is to be searched and known by other places that speak more clearly.

第10節（章の結論）

① 日本語原文（新翻訳）信仰と生活における最終的な判定者は、教会の会議でもなく、人でもなく、伝統でもなく、聖霊が語られる聖書そのものである。

② 一般信徒向け訳（簡明版）信仰の決まりを決める最後の基準は、人でも教会の力でもなく、ただ聖書そのものだけです。

③ 英語原文（1646）The Supreme Judge… can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture.
